Now that the things are settling a bit, there are hopes that archaeologists will not only be able to resume their work there, but may even have some further support from the Libyan government for research. Like its neighbors, Algeria and Egypt, Libyan terrain provides a fertile ground for archaeological remains. And much is still unexplored. From Science:As for archaeology, Mattingly and colleagues tend to burst out in superlatives when they describe Libya's riches, which include five UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites: the Greek city of Cyrene; Leptis Magna, the Roman city where emperor Septimius Severus was born; a Phoenician trading post called Sabratha; Ghadamès, an ancient oasis town; and a vast collection of rock paintings near the Algerian border.
On top of that, there are massive hidden treasures, says Mattingly, who runs a U.K. project in the Sahara called Desert Migrations, spanning everything from the northward movement of early hominins to ancient desert civilizations and 19th century trade routes. “The evidence is everywhere you look, and it's of extraordinary value,” he says. “It's the envy of the rest of the world.”
The museums and most of the sites fortunately escaped harm in the recent fighting. However, the future of the archaeology in Libya is far from certain:
Just how Libyan archaeology will evolve depends to a large degree on what happens to the country's Department of Antiquities. Its director, Salah Agab—whom Science was unable to contact—was suspended from his job, Michel says, like many other high-ranking officials, but he has since been reinstated. Mattingly hopes that Agab will keep his post, calling him a “wonderful guy and genuinely someone of vision.” But the department needs to be rebuilt and strengthened, Mattingly adds.
Scientists from other disciplines who have worked in Libya are eager to return as well. “If things settle down really quickly, I could be back next year,” says University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno, who visited Libya to finalize a study agreement 10 days before the uprising started. With Libyan partners, Sereno hopes to search for dinosaur fossils in a mountain ridge extending along the coast. “It's really terra incognita,” he says, “and as the Earth gets smaller, it's great to have a place that is that unknown.”
“Gaddafi cared a lot about security but not really about science and education,” says Salem Sharata, who teaches geology at the University of Az Zawiyah. Yet Sharata senses that Libya is finally moving in the right direction. But it will continue to need help, he says. “I hope you guys won't leave us alone.”

“Persiapan keimanan.”
Jawapannya membuatkan saya bermuhasabah panjang. Seketika saya terdiam memikirkannya. Melihatkan saya yang terdiam, beliau menerangkan,
“Mungkin kalau antum tanya kepada orang-orang lain, ramai yang akan menerangkan apa yang perlu dibeli seperti pakaian bayi, alat-alat mandi, berapa ribu ringgit yang perlu dicari dan sebagainya. Tetapi ana nak mengingatkan antum tentang sesuatu yang ramai orang sering lupa. Persiapan keimanan.
“Memang, persiapan-persiapan tadi penting. Namun berapa ramai orang yang dengan hadirnya cahaya mata dalam hidup, kemudian komitmennya kepada agama semakin mengendur? Komitmennya terhadap dakwah semakin melemah. Semuanya akibat kekurangan persiapan keimanan kepada Allah SWT.”
Seketika kami terdiam. Mendalam maksud yang cuba disampaikan.
“ Rasulullah SAW bersabda,
“Sesungguhnya kehadiran seseorang anak akan menyebabkan orang tuanya menjadi kedekut, pengecut, jahil dan mudah bersedih.”

“Kalau dulu, dia boleh berdakwah dan berkorban bersungguh-sungguh. Biar susah, biar lapar, biar tak selesa, biar tak cukup duit, semuanya dia boleh tahan. Bila sudah berkahwin, hidup berdua dengan seorang isteri, masih mampu bertahan lagi. Tetapi bila mula ada anak, keyakinannya mula goyah. Mula rasa risau kalau anaknya nanti tidak cukup makan. Mula risau kalau keluarganya nanti akan hidup susah. Mula risau nanti keluarga dan masyarakat akan kata apa.
“Padahal semua rezeki milik Allah. Allah yang beri rezeki tatkala dia masih bujang, dan Allah jugalah yang akan memberi rezeki tatkala dia sudah mempunyai anak. Keyakinannya selama ini hilang begitu sahaja, sehingga takut untuk berjuang di jalan Allah, takut untuk berkorban demi Islam.”
“Dan apa yang ana cakap ini berdasarkan pengalaman nyata. Ramai sudah yang tersungkur. Ada yang tergelincir, tetapi berjaya bangkit kembali. Namun yang tidak bangun-bangun lebih ramai.”
Jadi akhi, ingat pesan ana. Allah firman dalam Al-Quran,
Dan ketahuilah, bahwa hartamu dan anak-anakmu itu hanyalah sebagai ujian dan sesungguhnya di sisi Allahlah pahala yang besar.

“Pastikan dengan hadirnya anak, hidup kita semakin subur dengan jihad. Dengan kehadiran cahaya mata, hidup kita semakin meriah dengan tarbiyah. After posting my turkey ballotine photos from Thanksgiving, I was inundated with requests (demands) for a video demonstration. Of course, that would have meant buying and eating another turkey, so I decided to take the easy way out and post this clip from one of my heroes, Jacques Pépin.
This is from pepinfan’s YouTube page, and it looks to be an episode from the venerable chef’s public television series. This was the exact same technique I used on the turkey, except I needed to use a knife for several steps that he's simply doing with his hands. Hopefully it gives you some idea how it’s done. Enjoy!

This is a combination of a couple of different chicken soup recipes I have tried over the years. It is fairly simple to make and it is always better homemade than store bought. I have also tried to make matzo balls many times and mine have always come out so dense so I got a great tip from my Mom to substitute club soda for the water in the simple recipe that is on the back of the matzo meal box. It worked like a charm...my matzo balls were very light and fluffy!
Ingredients:
SOUP
1 (31/2 lb) chicken cut into 8 pieces
12 cups of water or enough to cover the chicken by at least an inch
1 large carrot, peeled, cut into bite size pieces
1 large parsnip, peeled, cut into bite size pieces
1 large onion cut into bite size pieces
4 medium stalks of celery, cut into bite size pieces
1 bouquet garni of 15 parsley sprigs, 15 dill sprigs, 1 tablespoon whole peppercorns (wrapped in cheesecloth and tied with cotton string)
3 T chicken consomme mex
1 chicken stock cube
Preparation:
Rinse chicken and place in a large soup pot.
Add water and bring to a boil over high heat. Skim any foam,residue, or fat that rises to the surface using a large spoon or skimmer and discard.
Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer and add carrot,parsnip, onion,celery,bouquet garni, consomme mix and stock cube.
Simmer, covered, for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Remove the bouquet garni.
Remove chicken from bone and either add back to the soup or use for something else.
Adjust seasoning.
Either serve with the vegetables or strain them out for clear broth.
Garnish with fresh parsley and/or fresh dill.
Matzo Balls
Ingredients:
2 T vegetable oil
2 large eggs, slightly beaten
1/2 cup matzo meal
1 tsp salt
2 T club soda
Preparation:
Blend oil, eggs, matzo meal, and salt together. Add club soda and mix until uniform. Cover and place in refrigerator for 15 minutes. Bring a large pot of water to a brisk boil (you can add some leftover club soda to the water as well). Reduce flame and drop balls approximately 1 inch in diameter formed from refrigerated mixture. Cover pot and cook 30 to 40 minutes.

From 'ad-Da'wah ilallaah' |
She was the first wife of the Prophet and the first heart to be affected and to accept his call to Islâm. She was Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid. When she reached adolescence, she came to be known as Taahira (righteous, virtuous) due to her noble and sublime character. (Al-Isaabah of Ibn Hajr (8/60))
She was married but soon both her father and husband died, leaving her in charge of the trade. Khadeejah became a business woman in her own right, know and respected throughout the Qur'aysh (The noblest tribe in Makkah; they were the keepers of the Ka'bah and the tribe that Khadeejah & the Prophet came from) for her noble character, wealth and good manners.
She heard the Prophet's fair dealings and how he was acclaimed to be al-Ameen (the trustworthy) amongst the people, and so she asked if he could accompany her merchandise to its various destinations - he agreed.
At the age of twenty-five, the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam accepted the proposal of Khadeejah, his distant cousin, who was fifteen years his senior. They had six children: two sons, Qaasim and 'Abdullaah, both of whom died in infancy, and four daughters, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthoom, and Faatimah.
Fifteen years later, what do we find Khadeejah saying when the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam came to her with his heart trembling after receiving the first Revelation? He informed her of the happening and said to her "O Khadeejah what has happened to me? I fear for myself?" She replied: "It can't be. Be happy. I swear by Allâh that he will never humiliate you. By Allaah, you join ties of relationship, you speak the truth, you bear people's burdens, you help the destitute, you entertain guests and you help the vicissitudes which affect the people." (Reported by 'Aa'ishah & collected by Muslim (eng. Trans vol.1 pp.96-8 no.301). Imaam an-Nawaawee, who wrote the commentary on Saheeh Muslim said that the scholars have explained Khadeejah's statement by saying that she knew that Allâh would never allow one who had been given such a generous character and noble manners by Him, to be affected by madness, since good manners is itself such a blessing from Allaah)
Look at her conviction in what the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said. Pause for a moment and note her weighty words. She didn't doubt him, nor show the slightest hesitation towards the words he uttered. In fact she was his greatest source of comfort, the first to provide security for him and be sincere to him. He attested to the messengership of her husband and was the first to believe in him, and who could have known him better? After all, she had been married to him for fifteen years. She was convinced that it could only be one of such eloquent character who could be worthy of revelation from Allâh and thus hers was the first heart to be moved, and to accept Islâm.
However, her loyalty and assistance didn't culminize there. By accepting and supporting his call to the worship of Allâh alone, Khadeejah, a woman highly esteemed among the Qur'aysh, was now denouncing their way of life, and the Qur'aysh were a proud and affluent people; and Makkah was at the heart of trading and the home of the idols - much revered by the Qur'aysh. They were not going to stand back and allow a man to now come and preach a way of life alien to theirs, rejecting their beliefs and everything they stood for. And remember when Islâm was first cultivated, the Muslims were small in number, and, in such a trying period, Khadeejah remained alongside the Messenger of Allâh in support whenever the Qur'aysh disclaimed him or contracted hostility towards him. She assisted him in preaching the words of Allâh and hence witnessed the division between the people of faith (eemaan) and those of disbelief (kufr).
This continued until her death on the eleventh of Ramadaan in the tenth year of the Prophethood - at the age of sixty-four. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam would think of Khadeejah often. Open up any book written on the life of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and you will not fail to find Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid mentioned and evidences pertaining to her excellence. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "Sufficient for you, from the women of the worlds are, Maryam bint Ibraaheem [the mother of Eesaa], Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid, Faatimah bint Muhammad [sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam] and 'Aasiyah, the wife of Fir'awn [Pharoah]." (Saheeh - Reported by Anas in Ahmad, at-Tirmidhee & others. Declared authentic by al-Albaanee in his Tarteeb Saheeh ul-Jaami' (no.18). The "sufficiency" mentioned here means 'sufficient regarding obedience to Allaah' (Shaykh Alee Hasan al-Halabee))
Further proof of the Prophet's inherent love for Khadeejah can be seen in 'Aa'ishah's statement: "I was not so jealous of any of the Prophet's wives as I was of Khadeejah. I never saw her, but he frequently mentioned her and he would often kill a sheep, cut it in pieces and send them round among Khadeejah's friends. I often said to him: 'It seems as if Khadeejah was the only woman in the world!' And he replied: 'She was indeed a fine woman and I had children from her." (Collected by al-Bukhaaree (eng. Trans. Vol.5 p.104 no.166) & Muslim (eng. Trans. Vol.4 p.1297 no.5972))
So we have the perfect role models, and it is only through reading about them, that we can truly love them and love to be like them, and understand why they are happy occupants of al-Jannah. And Jibreel, 'alayhis-Salaam, came with the good news from Allaah, saying to the Messenger, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, "When she [Khadeejah] comes, give her a greeting from her Lord and me, and give her the good news that in Jannah she will have a house of brilliant pearls, in which there will be no clamor or toil." (Reported by Abu Hurayrah & collected by al-Bukhaaree (vol.5 pp.104-5 no.168) & Muslim (vol.4 p.1297 no.5967))

At a time when embryonic stem cells research is a hot-potatoe issue for US politics, it is interesting to see the reaction in Iran. Yes, part of this has to with the definition of the beginning of life in Islam (often considered at 4 months - instead of at the time of conception), but still, this provides an nice insight into the dealings with science in deeply religious societies. By the way, evolutionary biology is also included in biology textbooks and we found the same positive reaction when we interviewed a few Iranian medical doctors who recently arrived in the US.
In any case, here is the segment on Iran's Stem Cell Fatwa from Frontline (Tip from Abu'l-Rauhan Al-Biruni):

However, there’s one category of pie whose fillings are so easy, they’re nearly impossible to mess up. That would be the seasonally appropriate nut pie. If you can work a whisk, and set a timer, you have what it takes to excel in this genre.
We added a handful of chocolate chips, but the recipe is based on this one from Allrecipes.com, which I came across looking for corn syrup free versions. By the way, it’s not that I think corn syrup is a “bad” ingredient, I just know that most people don’t have it on hand, and I’d hate for them to buy a whole bottle when a perfectly wonderful pie can be made without it.
In fact, the filling is so deliciously decadent the crust is almost an afterthought. If you ever want to rationalize buying a frozen pie shell, this is your chance. Of course, if you want real “homemade,” you can check out this video recipe for making pie dough, but the point is, either way your chocolate pecan pie is going to rock. Enjoy!

1 cup light brown sugar

Abi Malikah radiallaahu 'anhu said:

Some of the pleasantries of this tribe trace their origin in the tribe of Kinanah'. At this the Prophet said, 'This tribe itself depends on our humour.' [al-Bukhaaree, Chapter of Adaab (manners) p41]
Bakr Ibn Abd Allâh radiallaahu 'anhu:
That the Companions radiallaahu 'anhum of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam used to throw melons on one another by way of joke. But they became valiant when faced with the realities of life or its hardships. [al-Bukhaaree, Chapter of Adaab p41]
Rabiah Ibn Uthman radiallaahu 'anhu said:
That a certain Bedouin came to the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. He seated his she camel outside the holy Mosque and himself went inside to meet the holy Prophet. Some of the companions of the Prophet said to Nuaiman Ibn Amr al Ansari, 'If you slaughter this she camel and satisfy your hunger, the holy Prophet will pay its penalty'. The narrator says that very soon Nuaiman slaughtered the she camel. When the Bedouin came out of the Mosque and saw all this, he began crying out, 'O Muhammad! Some one has slaughtered her.' The holy Prophet came out and asked the people who had done that. The people told him that Nuaiman had done that. Now the Prophet went out in search of him. He found Nuaiman in the hose of Dabaah daughter of Zubair Ibn Abd al Muttalib. He had hidden himself in a cell and had put branches and dry barks and leaves of the date tree over his body. Someone cried out that he had not seen him. But this very man pointed to the place where Nuaiman was hiding. The Prophet took him out from there and his face was covered with dust and leaves of the date tree. The Prophet asked him who had asked him to do that. He said, 'O Messenger of Allâh! These very men who had told you about my whereabouts, had asked me to do that'. The holy Prophet began removing the leaves and barks from his head and face and remained laughing. The narrator says that later on the Prophet paid the price of the she-camel to that Bedouin. [Al Istiab, Vol III p575 and Isabah Vol III p570]
Umm Salamah radiallaahu 'anhaa said:
That Abu Bakr radiallaahu 'anhu went to the city of Busra on a trade mission. With him were Nuaiman and Suwaibit ibn Harmalah, and both were the two who had fought in the battle of Badr. Suwaibit was in charge of the provisions of the caravan. Nuaiman asked him to give him food. At this Suwaibit said, 'Wait a little and let Abu Bakr come'. Nuaiman was a witty and humorous fellow. He went to a group of men who had brought beasts of burden. He said to them, 'Will any of you purchase a slave?' They replied in the affirmative. Nuaiman said, 'That Arab slave is a plausible fellow and it is just possible that he might say that he is not a slave. If you leave him because of his words then blame me not, and break not the deal'. Those traders agreed to this. These men purchased him for 10 she-camels. Nuaiman brought the she-camels and pointing towards Suwaibit, he told them that that was the slave. The traders said, 'We already know that you will say this' (i.e. that he isn't a slave). Now the traders tied Suwaibit by his neck and wanted to take him to their place. In the meantime Abu Bakr came there, and he was informed about all of this. Abu Bakr and his companions when to those merchants and returned them to their she-camels. Thus they bought back Suwaibit. Later on when the Prophet was informed about this incident, he laughed.
